Good morning, Rockport. It's Sunday, October 4. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Rockport Daily Brief. Today we look at why the town's water ban continues even as the drought eases.

Rockport has banned all outdoor watering, and Gloucester allows hand watering only. For this week's Crosscurrents, we are asking, what should Cape Ann do before next summer? You can weigh in at capeanncurrent dot com slash crosscurrents.

Looking at the week ahead in town government. On Wednesday, October 7, the Ad Hoc Water Committee meets on Zoom at 2 p.m., and the School Committee meets at 7 p.m.

Rockport's total ban on outdoor water use remains in place, even though the state recently downgraded the region to a mild drought. The town says the ban protects its reservoirs, which are lower than expected. In late September, the town's water system was 58.6 percent full, compared to 67.3 percent a year ago. Carlson's Quarry alone held about 13.1 million gallons less than last year.

In local events today, the Spiran Lodge hosts a Swedish Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. At 2 p.m., the rescheduled Cape Ann Cake Fest takes place at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts. And tomorrow at noon, Cape Ann Plein Air hosts a painting demonstration at Granite Pier.

In high school sports, Rockport varsity teams return to action tomorrow when field hockey travels to Manchester Essex at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, girls soccer visits Manchester Essex at 4 p.m., and boys soccer hosts the Hornets at 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service expects a mostly sunny day today with a high near 60, followed by a 40 percent chance of showers tonight. Monday is expected to be mostly sunny, breezy, and milder, with a high near 66. Today's high tides in Rockport are up to two minutes earlier than Gloucester's high tides at 5:58 a.m. and 6:18 p.m.
