Voter registration deadlines approach and the week ahead in Essex

Good morning, Essex. It's Sunday, October 11. From the Cape Ann Current, I'm Kerry Jane, with your Essex Daily Current, free public information for Essex. Today we look at the state voter booklet.

Town budgets are tight across Cape Ann. What is one town service you would protect no matter what? That is this week's question for Crosscurrents, our reader voice column. Weigh in at capeanncurrent dot com slash crosscurrents.

Looking at the week ahead in Essex town government. On Tuesday, the Board of Health meets at 9 a.m. The Board of Selectmen meets at 6 p.m. The Finance Committee meets at 7 p.m.

The deadline to register to vote in the November 3 state election is Saturday, October 24. Early voting runs from October 17 to 30. The Secretary of the Commonwealth says every household should have received a printed voter booklet in mid September. The booklet covers the nine statewide ballot questions and is also available online.

In Essex today, the Trustees offer a Choate Island kayak and hiking trip at the Crane Wildlife Refuge from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Check the Trustees website for space.

In high school sports, the Manchester Essex girls soccer team lost 2 to 1 to Salem on Saturday. The field hockey team fell 7 to 0 to Sandwich on Saturday. On Columbus Day Monday, the field hockey team plays at Lynnfield at 10 a.m.

The National Weather Service expects mostly cloudy skies today with a high near 60. Rain is expected tonight, with a half to three quarters of an inch possible. Columbus Day is forecast to turn partly sunny with a high near 63. High tides in the Essex River run about 10 to 13 minutes later than Gloucester Harbor, which sees high tides today at 12:07 a.m. and 12:20 p.m.
